800,000 Lagos Residents Infected with HIV/AIDS - Says Lawmaker

A Lagos lawmaker has disclosed that about 800,000 Lagos residents, representing four percent of a population of 20 million, are infected with the dreaded HIV/AIDS disease, thus calling for more awareness campaigns to help stop the spread of the disease.

The Chairman, House Committee on Health, Hon. Segun Olulade, made this known in Lagos during his committee's oversight function visit to the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency.

While describing the statistics as alarming, Olulade however assured the management of the agency of his committee's partnership to help enlighten members of the public  on the prevalence of the disease.

Olulade, who represents Epe 2, also used the medium to call on the Local Council Development Authorities in the state to participate actively in creating awareness about HIV/AIDS.

 He also emphasized the need to get the support of his colleagues in the Assembly to help create platforms that would encourage people living with HIV/Aids to function  optimally in the society without stigmatization.

The Acting Director of the agency, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye,  who welcomed the visiting team comprising members of the Lagos State's House Committee on Health as well as the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency of the Ministry of Health, thanked the chairman for the pledge and his commitment towards pursuing a healthy lagos.

He further tasked the state government not to relent in its efforts to curb the disease.

Meanwhile, as part of move to ensure safety of Lagos residents, the lawmaker representing Epe Constituency 2, Hon.Olusegun Olulade, has given illegal occupants of a landed property earmarked for primary Health Center in Ejigbo  Area of Lagos State to vacate the area within one month.

Olulade who is the Chairman, House Committee on Health Services of the Lagos State House of Assembly, said he was towing this line because he was preoccupied with ensuring that the health sector became totally revamped  in line with the strategies, innovations and dreams of the state Governor, Mr Akinwumi Ambode.
Olulade said, "the Governor is putting everything in place to move the health sector to the next level and this plan must not be sabotaged."

The legislator therefore urged all the trespassers to vacate the land, which it was gathered, had adequate notice which informs members of the public on the proposed construction work to be done on there.
