7-Month-Old Baby Dies After Mom Rolls On Top Of Her

A 7-month-old baby died after her mother, who was allegedly under the influence of narcotics, rolled on top of her, prosecutors said.

Police and emergency medical personnel were called to a residence in Ventnor, New Jersey on January 3 in reference to an unconscious and unresponsive child, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Medical personnel performed CPR on the baby before transporting her to a local hospital.

She was then transferred to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, where she later died, prosecutors said. Results from an autopsy are pending.

Prosecutors believe the girl was injured when her mother, Lisa Scalia, 30, rolled on top of her.

“While being under the influence of narcotics [Scalia] did roll over onto [the] baby smothering her and causing her to lose consciousness,” a criminal complaint states.

Investigators allegedly found 34 baggies of heroin, 10 oxycodone pills, 8 Lyrica pills, and Suboxone in Scalia’s possession, according to the complaint.

Scalia was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and four counts of possession of controlled substances. She was taken into custody on $100,000 cash bail.

She has not yet retained an attorney, according to court officials.
